I've been struggling with my beautiful, challenging boy for five and a half years, and today, after a long meeting with a paediatrician, we finally got diagnoses of anxiety disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder, and a choice to start down the road towards an ASD diagnosis. He told us that yes, we did indeed have cause for concern, he shows many of the classic signs of high functioning Asperger's, and (not in so many words) that we were doing the right thing by seeking help.
I know I should feel sad, but at the moment I just feel relief

I can totally understand that relief. xx It must be nice to be listened to and to know that people are there to help you.

Kaja I suggest joining Cairns Autism Spectrum Group. You can talk to people with Spectrum kids of all ages and we help one another getting through all the hoops. Theres also social events for families. Just google them or search them on fb

Thanks ladies. Rhyb I'll certainly look into that after I see him well settled into prep. He has made a surprisingly good start.
I have been thinking about it all day, and although it's not what I would have chosen for him, for my own sake I wouldn't change a single thing about him. To me, he's perfect just as he is.

Glad you have finally got some answers so that you can all move forward. Sounds like you are in a really good space with it all.

That's great that he is settling in well and enjoying prep too ;)

Hi Kaja, I had exactly the same reaction when i found out about my sons adhd and pddnos, i felt such a feeling of relief, I would take it all away from my son in a heart beat but at least we had an understanding of why he was behaving the way he was and there were ways we were able to help him.

All the best for your journey, it sounds like you are in a great place to help him
