Hello

I am buying (today or tomorrow) a new vacuum cleaner. I just come back from the shops and here is what I found:
- Piranha (cyclonic bagless) 2400w (8kg) for $99
- Electrolux Ultraactive Green (bagless) 1350w (6.2kg) for $340 (on sale, was $400)
- Dyson D29 (bagless) (10kg) for $444 (on sale, was $579)

I had a Hoover CV340 which is only 1500w but I liked it a lot... The Electrolux Green looks fine (because green), but only 1350w. Will that be less powerful than my old vacuum cleaner? It's a new model, but there is no mention of no loss of suction.
The Piranha is very cheap but seems very powerful and reviews are not too bad about that brand... http://www.productre...w-hand-vac.html
The Dyson one should be OK but no power mentioned, maybe it's not better than the Electrolux green one in regards to power? Plus, I can read in reviews that Dyson isn't always worth the price you pay for. Plus, the seller told me it's the lower model for that brand, so maybe it's crap? And it's heavy (and it's ugly :p). I mean, I am supposed to prefer the Dyson, everyone prefers Dyson, but it has lots of cons...

Our budget is $500 maximum, that's why I didn't select other models. So, about the price... I guess I could pay the $444 for the Dyson, but that would feel better to pay only $99 for sure.

What would you buy? (you have got two hours... :))
Thanks!

Someone I know who works in the vacuum business said the electrolux is better then dyson, dyson just has better marketers ;)

We have a miele and I love it.

Really? That would be great, because the Electrolux one looks much nicer and is a bit cheaper.
Well, I must admit I don't like too much the high-tech design of the Dysons.

We have a dyson and I love it! It's only the base model but it's the best vacuum I've ever owned.

I love dyson.

Its the only make we owned in the UK, as we had samoyeds and it cleaned up after them the best, my sister is still using our old one and its around 10yrs old and going strong.

I bought a few cheap ones here and they were crap, so we paid out for another dyson.

What are you talking about?
If you are talking about Dyson, I can find one under $500 at the Good Guys.

And what is an automatic vacuum cleaner? Does it clean your house all by itself? :)

No one else to say good things about Electrolux? :p

You all say good things about Dyson, is yours a basic model? because the one I could afford is the most basic one (model D29).

We had a Dyson for 9 yrs and it was brilliant. 2yrs ago I bought a very expensive Electrolux to replace the Dyson as I don't like the handle thingy on the new Dyson's. Honestly, it was no where near the quality of the Dyson, everything cracked on it and I couldn't suck up anything larger than 1/4 tissue without it immediately blocking up.

I threw it in the bin recently, couldn't stand it another moment, the frustration factor with using it was massive.

Went and bought a Nilfisk for under $200, worked well in the shop but the stupid filter system meant I couldn't even vacuum the whole house without emptying the canister 4 times and shaking out the filters. Then the filters required washing after that.

Last week I bit the bullet and we went to buy a new Dyson. They still have the stupid handle thing though so I had a quick squiz at what else they had and saw a vacuum that was nearly identical to our old original Dyson. It is a Vax and apart from the color it looks, feels and vacuums the same. Cost $349 and came with a big and small power head and a brilliAnt hard floor head.

It probably won't last a long as a Dyson but I hope it will get me through the next 3-4 years until Dyson gets rid of the silly handle :)

Are you really totally set on bagless??

I always thought bagless was the way to go - less cost etc Ended up with a bagless Vax which fell apart after just 2 years use - I had to empty the canister every 2 weeks and had to manually clean the filter once a month as it ended up clogged up and would drastically reduce suction... I was sooooo happy when the hose finally snapped off the actual machine hahaha.

Anyway I was 99% certain I would get a Dyson next as I had wanted one for years but they always cost too much but I decided to research a bit... There are some interesting video's on youtube that demonstrate bagless vs bagged - and it convinced me to go back to bags :)

I bought a Nilfisk Power Allergy from Powerbuys as it so much cheaper than at the good guys and it has been amazing. I've had it since the start September and have only had to change bags just before Xmas so got almost 4 whole months out of one bag - and there is nothing on the filter :)

My budget (that my DH set) was also $500, so its going to take me another 7 years to reach that if I consider using 4 bags a year at $25 per 4 pack...

When the bag is full I just pull the vent shut - and it all goes in the bin, no mess, no dust flying about :)

The mieles are bag. But like I said I love mine. Way more then my mums dyson. We have the turbo head and u find it picks up so much more then another one I used.

And the bags r so easy no dust everywhere when emptying. It's great. And I'm super fussy cause I have allergies.

Our Electrolux didn't even last 2yrs and was about $350. It did work well but not long term. My $90 - 12 year old Volta beetle still works well lol but bags annoy me now.

I have used a lot of vacuums. Including dysons, electrolux etc... My mum is a house cleaner and I have helped her at times.

I think the best one by far is the Miele. ( I didn't like dysons, I found they lost suction and were rather cumbersome) I have a Miele at home. My one is 4 years old and gets used everyday and it is still going strong, with perfect suction.
At most we spend $20 every year and a half on bags. As PP said it can be messy /dusty emptying the bagless.

Miele seems to be the better choice for bags vacuum cleaners. I don't want bags, because I don't want to have to buy bags, I don't have time for that. And anyway, Miele vacs are still $400 minimum, the price of the Dyson.
Last night I was thinking that I don't want to pay $400 for a vacuum cleaner that we are probably going to use only for a few years (like five). If I was sure we are going to stay longer in Australia, I would buy an expensive one. But we had that Hoover vacuum cleaner for the past five years and it cost less than $200... The Piranha vac seems to be very crappy, I found lots of very negative comments on Internet, so it's not in my list any more. I guess I will have to check again in stores.

I just bought the Electrolux UltraActive Green.
The main negative thing that I thought about it was its power (1350w), I was afraid it would mean less suction power. But I just had a little talk with a seller and there is no relation between that power and the suction power. So all good for that vacuum cleaner. And the Dyson was really too expensive, after having thought more carefully about our needs and budget.
Thanks a lot for your messages.

So I have got it for two weeks now and I am soooo happy with it!
It's very powerful (much more than my previous one, even on the lower setting) and so silent. I just vacuumed the whole house, and my newborn baby wasn't very happy today. So no sleep. So eventually I just had to vacuum with her in my arms, and she felt sound asleep in a few minutes (and be reassured, I did it because it was safe for her ears, it's just so silent). Then I vacuumed all the house and at the end I tried to vacuum the bedroom where she (my baby) was sleeping. And it didn't wake her up! I am so impressed.
Everything is good with that vacuum cleaner, I am really really happy. Washable filters (and bagless) which means that I won't have to buy filters neither. Very long hose with a easy handle (convenient when the other hand is used by a baby :)). Nice looking, easy to store. I love it. :p
