I apologis in advance I think this is gonna be all over the shop but its all related so I'll try and keep it together.
DS has just turned 3 and still wakes over night, somenights just once but most night 3-4 times. which is more than W who sleeps through the night. I have to lie down with him to get him back to sleep which normally results in me falling asleep in his bed for part of the night.
He also still wear nappis to bed. He is in clothish fitteds with MAZ cover - just regular day ones which is enough for him. They are BV inner and outers. since he TTed 12 months ago his night nappies have become horrid. They stink the ammonia smell is so strong that it brings tears to my eyes every morning and I have gagged at the smell more than once. We have the same problems with microfleece inners as well coz I've tried just switching out nappies for those
In the last couple months DS has been waking more often gone from once to several times and he has also started complaining druing the night that his nappy hurts - we often take it off at 3 or 4 am with him in tears but sometimes this results in a wet bed unfortunately. His nappy also usually leaves redness on his bottom where it sits.
Do you think that the ammonia is so strong that its possibly burning him and that is whats waking him up so much at night? I hate seeing him obviously in pain from the nappies but he isn't ready to night train. We were getting some wet nights but mostly dry however ever since his night waking has increased and its starting hurting him he is wet every night.
Is it possible that putting him in disposibles overnight will help stop the ammonia from sitting so close to his skin? I hate to even be thinking it coz we haven't had a sposie in this house in almost 3 years now but if its going to be better for him I'm willing to consider it.
night nappies, waking etc

My night nappies used to have the same strong smell and it was awful! I now put the boosters ( I use a pocket nappy on DD ) in a bucket of water and leave it there until I wash ( I occasionally change the water if there was heaps of wee in it ). I have found doing this has helped with the build up and smell.
Maybe try that or a strip wash to give them a good clean before trying sposies.
Could you use a liner of some kind against his skin to see if that stops the red bum?
Sorry not much help but that's all I can think of.

I would use more than one nappy over night, change him when he wakes. I know it's a pain but your already up. I'd also make sure the nappies are nice and clean, no ammonia build up being left behind.
My DD always had stinky wee when she was in naps, enough to burn your nostrils and make your eyes water. I fouls the combination of RG with some funk rock in the pre rinse cycle really helped!
Good Luck

When I used cloth at night I used to change my kids if they woke up, no need to turn the lights on or anything. I actually gave up cloth at night because I was worried about my DD having to put up with the smell. I know I certainly couldn't sleep near it.
