Has anyone had any laser hair removal done? I am considering getting my underarms done. Both shaving and waxing result in rashes and infections and I am over having unsightly armpits

I have a silkn sensepil home laser and I love it! I looked into professional laser but three treatments was almost enough to pay for the machine. The only annoying part is buying new cartridges, they cost $138 in the shaver shop but I recently found them on ebay 2 for $110 including post! Bargain!

so how often do you have to use it before the hair removed is permanently gone? And can you use it on any body part?

how long does the cartridge last? I just googled it and it said to replace after every couple of treatments. But what is an average treatment in surface area, a leg, an underarm etc?

Not sure how long it takes, I'm into my second month, third treatment and there is a noticeable difference on my legs and bikini line, can't see under my arms very well (will look in the mirror tonight) but it certainly feels different! I think after a few months you would just be doing patch areas, obviously on my bikini line I must have missed a couple of spot cause thats where the patches of hair are!

The one I have has passed testing and can be used on the face. In the instructions it says "do not use on your face", found this after I had bought it thinking I could use it on my face, I then called them up and YES you can use it on your face, all the packaging was printed before the tests where finished and they got approval!

I think I got roughly the following out of one cartridge, 3 half legs (thats both legs, so six single legs, up to the knee), about 3-4 bikini, and about 6-8 underarm, can't say I was counting so I think it's somewhere around there. :P

wow, thanks for all the info. They sound fantastic!

After using them, are there any red marks and if so how long does it take to go back to normal? Also, does it hurt at all?

oh, and how long does it each sitting take, ie how long does it take to do 1 leg for example?

okay, getting excited but still have so many questions. How well does it work on a man with really thick hair? TMI but DP has hairy back and always gets me to shave it for him as he sweats and gets itchy but it so thick it clogs the razors lol is a PITA, will this work okay for him too? Wonder how many cartridges it would take to do his back LMAO!

I does not hurt it is almost like getting tapped with the back of a hot spoon some you feel more than others but the pain from it spots after about 2 seconds i don’t get any red marks at all

As for back hair you need to shave the area first so you would still to shave

The thicker and the blacker the hair is the better it works

It is permenant if you use it and if you need to shave the area for some reason always use the machine after other wise your hair will grow back i have not used it for 8 mths cause i am pregnant and my areas i was doing have gone back to normal but when i start.again i know it will not take very many goes to get it back to almost nothing

You can adjust the setting, I normally use setting 3, obviously the tender areas hurt a bit more, ankles, back of the knees! I always do bikini first before the globe heats up, then underarms, then legs.

2 half legs would take about half an hour I think, underarms take less than 5 minutes.

Don't know about really hairy people but generally if you have dark hair and light skin your a good candidate. You have to shave before doing it and you can shave between treatments, that was the biggest selling point for me, I used to wax and I would hate having to shave between waxes if a surprise event/ dinner/warm day came up without warning.

Forgot to say I don't get red marks but you need to avoid the sun!

Well my birthday is next week so DP said go for it and I have just bought a Silk'n Pro home IPL. I am pleased to say that recently Silk'n has dropped the price of its machines down and I was able to get for it $445 plus $15 express postage and it comes with an extra globe as well. It will arrive some time next week. I am so excited. This is the most expensive present I have bought myself ever. I thought it was about time I treated myself :D

I got it from here http://cgi.ebay.com....=item4cf4de7811

I always worry about dodginess through ebay but asked heaps of questions before buying and this seller is great. They respond to all communication within 12 hours, sometimes sooner. I paid the extra $15 for DHL express and they posted the same day I paid. It only took 3 business days to arrive.

If you buy through the Silk'n website this machine will cost over $800!

I had my bikini done in a salon and it was all back within 6 months. Very disappointing! The home machines sound good though as you can persevere. I do have italian genes which seem to make my hairs super sonic.

The other thing I really like is the no!no! which also gradually reduces hair but with much lower running costs. Its the only thing I can use on my legs without getting ingrowns and these days the hair comes back very slowly with lots of bare patches.

janem - does it take a long time to do an area, and how many treatments did you need to do to be totally hair free? Say underarms - how long to actually do them? And do you need to buy cartridges for this machine?

Have been thinking about getting this done in a salon for ages, but this looks like it might be a cheaper option - plus it would be impossible to take the boys with me while I was getting it done!

Underarms only take about 30 seconds to do the machine I have you get 750 light waves out of it only use about 8 for each underarm I have done mine about 7 times but I had heaps and heaps of hair and had to stop while I was pregnant so my hair grew back a bit

So far I have only done my underarms. They are not 100% hair free yet, but the hair has been reduced drastically, I would say by up to 80% gone. From my unnderstanding they may never be 100% permanant hair removal but even so I am 100% happy with the results. i have gone from having to shave every 2 days and putting up with dreadful shaving rash every time, which was painful and unsightly. I can now go up to 3 weeks without shaving or doing anything at all as the amount of hair that grows is so minimal. And no rash! For the first time since being a teenager I have been able to forget about my armpits. I can wear singlets every day without having to worry about it at all. And a bonus is that now I don't sweat as much and have less BO! and when I do shave the small amount that is there I get no rash.

Okay, so the treatment itself, as in the light flashes to my underarms I do in under 5 minutes for both arms. It is so quick. It took about 3x 5 minute treatments 2 weeks apart each one to get to this stage. It takes about 6 flashes per armpit. The cartridges hold 750 flashes before having to buy a new one. With the machine I purchased I got a cartridge free so it will be 1500 flashes before I have to buy another one, which I can get off ebay for around the $50 mark. I am so very happy with it and even if the hair regrows in 12 months, as so often happens even with professional lasering, I can just retreat. It is still a way better alternative to where I was before I purchased doing the shave, rash, shave, rash, shave, rash routine that was driving me to insanity.

I am happy to take a photo of my armpits if anyone wants to see :P . I only wish I took some before shots!

Oh and the other thing that helped with my decision to buy was that the second hand machines sell for almost the same amount as a new one on ebay. So I figured I could get about 80-90% of my money back if it didn't work out for me.

Mmmm - sounds great.

The Silk'n have a new model out now: My link

Was looking at the old one on ebay, only about $400 now, or the new one works out to be about $525 AUD with shipping (they have 15% off at the moment with the code APRIL15).

Might be a nice mothers day pressie

Oh and here is a good comparison review I found: My link

The No No Hair would be a good one to try if you didn't want to spend to much $.

ooh interesting I just got a Scoopon deal and I'm getting my underarms done - is it easy to use? The salons make it sound like you need a bloody rocket science degree before you should let anyone use it on you....obviously a lot cheaper to buy one than go to a salon though. I'm interested to see hwo it goes for me - I've waxed for years and years but the hair is still pretty dark, just fine.

if you buy through the silk'n site it will diirect you to the Australian site which is here My link it is important to get an AU model so you have the correct plug from the machine and don't have to use an adaptor. The silk'n pro and the silk'n sensEpil both have new models out, they simply have the two sorts because men are using more and more and they don't want the pink machines! They are both exactly the same in the way they work.

this is about 5 days since last shave, as you can see there is only patchy growth. Hopefully after another treatment or 2 there will be even less, although even if this is as good as it gets I am still happy :D

hmm, now I'm thinking about one of these!

My skin is 'sensitive', so doesn't appreciate the shave lol, I can't stand waxing (only do eyebrows), and we don't have any places that do laser down here, and i'm not traveling lol.

So the girls with it, money well spent?? Looks like you're all happy with them!

This will sound stupid... I always wondered if it would work on men's faces, LOL, poor dh has a 5 oclock shadow a few hours after shaving!

yes money well worth it in my opinion.

Not a stupid question at all. Yes it can be used on mens faces, in fact many men buy this machine which is why they made 2 designs as the men didn't want to buy the pink one! I have been concentrating on my underarms but my DP can't wait for me to get started on his back!! apparently the darker and thicker the hair the better it works.

so do you shave then do it - or do it with a bit of hair there? I'm going to a salon for it tomorrow - cannot wait

you have to shave first. The laser works by travelling through the skin and targeting the melanin (dark pigment) in the hair folicle. So if you don't shave then all the hair will just get singed and you risk getting a burn to the skin. It also means that it targets the outside of the hair and not travel far enough under the skin to reach the folicle. It is by stunning it at the base that stops it from growing back. It is also the reason only works well on dark hair and why you can't laser over tans or dark pigments like moles and large freckles.

If you are getting it done at a salon they might prefer to shave it first themselves rather than you do it?

I've been thinking alot about this lately, i am another that s hair starts growing back within hours of shaving :( I shave when i can be bothered lol, and always get incredibly itch under my arms for days after shaving, will this stop it as i wont have to shave as often?

I go up to 2 or 3 weeks without shaving now and when I do I don't get rashes or itches because there is hardly anything there to shave now.
