So I have done myself a pretty nasty injury on my stupid knees. After a physio appointment yesterday (a week after I injured myself) he told me there was a lot of swelling and inflamtion near the bone, and to ice, strap and take anti-inflammatories.

Now I have been piggybacking Neurofen and panadine and it's allowing me to walk (though still in pain). I need something stronger, and shouldn't be taking panadine at all (even though the stupid chemist said it was ok when I brought it) as it contains codine.

So what can I take? I need one ibprofen and one something else awesome.

Someone please help me!

I think *most* pain killers are safe whilst breastfeeding. What you have to consider is bubs age, and how frequently they feed vs. how much can possibly be transferred through your milk.

THEN consider if the benefits of taking it outweigh possible risks of bubs being sleepy or reducing your supply whilst you take it etc..

Personally I'd take whats needed. I've known people who were on oxycodone for years and successfully breastfed throughout, with nil side effects.

I'm sure there is a great book out there on how breastmilk is produced and therefore how medications and such cross, but my mind is failing at 11pm and I cannot recall it at all lol

Bub's is 12 months, and has about 6 feeds a day. I'm trying to take them when she isn't feeding much, so she wakes, morning feed I take the them after that, then next feed at midday. I take the next lot at night after she has gone to sleep.

Am feeling a bit better today, may be able to just take neurofen.

That wouldn't matter much.. the rate their absorbed + their half-life kinda ruin that bit.. they don't just leave your system in the way food does :P lol

I seriously wouldn't worry.. I took oxycodone several times in teh course of a week and didn't hesitant to breastfeed - I know the rate in which breastmilk renews/restores itself is quite fast, and that medications wont leech in continuously(from what I've read) in the same dose.. Kinda hard to explain.. but yeah - I wouldn't worry at all since this is obviously a short-term use of the medications.

Yep, same here Jenn, I took Oxycodone for 2-3 days with serious teeth problems around Dec last year - bub was 18 months and I didnt think twice to be honest - it was needed. It was either that or lie there screaming in pain so I took them and I was fine and so was bub.

If you are going to take anything that might have the 'drownsy factor' in it though, be smart and watch bub of course. But my bub didnt have any change at all - she ate slept and played as normal - and had a mum that could handle the pain (and was super happy LOL).

I've been watching bubs, no change in eating/sleeping well, except her teeth no longer seem to be bothering her (she is getting molars and was a complete nightmare last week), so maybe it is having some effect on that?

If anything she is sleeping better than normal, but the same amount (just less waking).

I've been on lots of things, even medication containing Caffeine and not seen any difference in Cait lol I guess the doses I was taking were small enough to not transfer.

You know when I was put on weak bladder medication, to correct it.. The dr was going to give me the pill form, which in a study apparently leeched 5mcg/day, but since it has ugly side effects of constipation, we went for patches. They are 3.9mg and only leech 2.5mcg/day.. that's not MG that MICROGRAMS... For most things, 1 milligram (mg) = 1/1,000 gram 1 microgram (ug) = 1/1,000,000 gram.. So take that for thought LOL

Oh uhm, I said that about the pill vs. patch to note that often the transfer isn't much, and that's throughout the day, not necessarily all at once. Patch vs. pill was through digestion vs. transdermal, and it cut it in half, but really the first figure wasn't much at all!

if you want an alternative - try arnica tablets and arnica cream - you can get it from the health food store or chemists that stock that kind of stuff. I get Martin & pleasance brand cream - on a glass jar - is the strongest 'formula' of them all that I can find. I checked the the natropath and my GP and both gave me the all clear. Is fantastic for soft tissue injury.

Thanks for that, I do have arnica cream and arnica drops here, but I need to have my knees strapped (its a tracking problem) and the cream stops the strapping from staying in place. May take some more drops, but I think I still need the drugs. I'm down to just Neurofen today, so thats a good sign that things are starting to improve.

LOL I drink about 4 cups of coffee and day, also green tea and havent noticed anything either. I used to drink decaf but the kids were making me coffees (arent they sweet!) and one day I noticed they were using normal coffee so I dumped the decaf after that. Some days I dont drink coffee at all though or any caffeine so please no lectures. I just feel like Im haunting your posts and quoting them now Jenn!! Im your own personal ghost.

Haha, we have never had any problem with caffeine, but my friends bub has serious issues with lactose! If mum drinks a glass of milk bub gets the worst wind (she is 13months old) all night :(

Think I need to just keep plodding, hopefully will be better soon!

It sounds like your getting better but, I took panadiene regularly for almost 6 weeks when Simon was a newborn, due to a nasty tear and then the stiches fell apart :(

Also if you can get to the physio asap they will help ++++ if I can afetr I've hurt my knee I try and get there that day, they do some therapeutic Ultrasound and it works a treat at reducing the swelling.
