Ok, so you may have seen my other thread, my knees are shocking!

Atm I can barley walk, so I think I need to do something about this.

Who would be the best person to go see? A physio? Osteopath? GP? Chiro even?

I have full private health insurance too, so something that is covered by that would be nice :)

I'd actually start with a gp if you have a good one who can try and judge what sort of problem and therefore who to see, and provide a referral. For exampe if its worn cartlidge a physio won't help much. I was referred to an orthopedic surgeon by my gp when i had soreness.

eta - a physio may be able to help strengthen the right muscles to releive pain.

yep start with the GP, and they will refer you. You will need a referral to be able to see a specialist and claim on your health insurance.

Hiya Merla,

commiserations on the knee issue - just spent an hour at the physio trying to get my knee to work again this morning courtesy of a drunk driver who decided to remove me from the foot path 4yrs ago.... long story I digress.

Given you are in B'ne here's my list.....

Dr Simon Carter - GP at Taragindi - specialises in musculoskeletal issues - was / is one of the GP's for the brisbane bulls (cricket) if that means anything to you - knows his stuff,
Dr Mark Richardson Orthopaedic specialist at the Wesley but you will need a referral and only if you need surgery - but if you need an MRI Medicare will cover almost full cost it if the specialist refers but only a few dollars if the GP refers you! go figure.....
David Peirce Pondera Physio at Yeronga, David was the 5th Physio I went too, is a sports nut as well but also does pilates and unlike some physio's will give you home exercise programs - and expect you to follow them!! Love David - he was the only physio who persisted to help me walk again....
Dr James Fardoulys - another orthopaedic surgeon - got 2nd opinion from him - probably who Simon refers patients to most but he was on holidays when I needed the referral so Simon sent me to Mark instead.
Acupuncture - saw someone near the PA hospital but can't find her business card - but David has acupuncture and massage at his clinic now as well.
Chiropractor - David referred me to Sally ?? Park Road Chiropractic at Milton when I was pregnant and he had exhausted his professional skills.
My usual GP is someone different again ( this is embarrassing reading this - am I on a medical merry-go-round or what) but happily admits that she is good with women things but equally fine with me to take my knees elsewhere!

I think thats about it in my eternal search for a solution.. If you want more details let me know.

Good luck

Just saw your other post re shoes / orthotics etc. You should be able to claim orthotics on private health under your extras - I do. but I wouldn't bother buying new anythings until you get some advice on what you can do re strength and mobility. New Balance is a great brand - thats what I've been recommended and if you get them from a podiatrist rather than sports store they will often have the narrow and wide fittings as well as regular. My Podiatrist is Darren Stewart at My Foot doctor camp Hill - yep another person I see.... no wonder our private health bill is huge!

also depends on what is wrong - apart from sore / buggered knees that don't work - do you have a diagnosis? Probably best to start there are that will assist in informing treatment options....

I have problems with my hips rolling in, which caused my knees to roll in and develop strangely, I have very weak ligaments that hold my knee cap in place, so often when I exercise my knee cap will rub against the side of my knee and cause bruising of the bone.

Not really sure who can fix it, I have been down all these roads before and there still fucked :P

I have booked the physio (one that participated in medibank privates system as money is tight), next step will be some fantastic new shoes, possibly an xray (if they think it nessary) to find out exactly what is wrong and some osteo trips. *sigh* Maybe I should just stop exercising :P

OnePossum - Thank you so much for that! I will defiantly check them out, especially if this physio turns out to be shit :P
