What's the best way to keep temps down??? In true fashion DS is getting sick just as we have a busy few days coming Posted Image

He's had high temps (ranging between 37.9 and 39) since yesterday, apart from that he has no other symptom of anything. Is sleeping ok, a bit more clingy/whingy than normal and a little off food but that's it.

He's decided at 18months he doesn't like taking medicine anymore so I've been trying to get panadol/nurofen into him but half of it often ends up spat back at me or dribbled down his chin! It's bringing his temp down slightly but not a whole lot.....so what else could I do?? He's about to have a bath, and is only in thin pants/tshirt.....I just worry about it not coming down enough and going up to much!

TIA

oh, and is there any truth to panadol being better for fever and nurofen being better for pain or are they both going to do the same job???

Hi,

Have you tried panadol suppositories before? They work great and are good for bubbas who spew the panadol up too quickly or wont take it like your bubba. They are small and usually it doesnt even bother them to put in ;) Hope he gets better soon hun. xx

There is a school of thought that - He has a temp for a reason...some kind of illness, the temp suggests his body is fighting the illness and thats a good thing. If you give him panadol/nurofen (whatever) to bring down his temp or suppress the symptoms, he may keep the illness longer cause his body isn't effectively fighting it. Same as if you have vomiting/diarrohea if you stop these symptoms by taking drugs then your body is not expelling the illness and will possibly be sicker for longer.

Not suggesting you should never use panadol/nurofen, and certainly high temp is cause for concern - much higher than 39 and I'd be off to hospital.

I'm no doctor and certainly don't claim to be an expert, its just a thought.

yeah, I tend to not give anything until it hits 40, thats my limit lol, unless they are truly miserable, then I will give it them earlier. sounds like you are doing everything, the only other thing I was told by a nurse once is to take a warm washcloth, just damp, and just wipe arms and legs, but dont make it cold, as if he starts to shiver, his temp will go up even more.

Hope it doesnt last too long

as for what works better, with some of my kids neurofen works better for temps, and another one, panadol works better. I prefer to give panadol, but the kids prefer the neurofen taste.

thanks girls - yeah I'm trying not to give the medicine to him (not that he wants to take it at the moment anyway!)
He's not too bad, it's really only the high temps hanging around that I'm worried about. Will see how he goes tonight and hopefully he's better in the morning or its off to the dr!!

I try to avoid our emergency department, last time we were there he was put on fast track and it still took 6 hrs to be seen!

Hi
your DS is not yet 2YO, else other than panadol/nurofen the obvious ones I'd suggest a natural remedy Olive Leaf Extract. The taste is erm...not that pleasant but i mix it into DS1's milk to give it to him.
The tissue salt tablets by martin & pleasance (in small bottle with blue cap) Pain and relief for kids tastes like lollies, DS1 loves them.

Hi
my DS suffers from frequent tonsilitus and high temps of over 39
I dont give anything if its below 39 as the fever helps fight it, but between 39.2 -40 which it usually sits at he becomes very poorly and shakes so i use both panadol and ibruprofen as we cant keep the temp down otherwise and that doesnt always work for very long so we were advised on giving warm baths.
I Have since heard mixed reviews on warm baths but we were told at the hospital too both here and in the UK and it has helped several times.
