I have been unwell for the last month and have lost quite a bit of weight, in the last week I have been REALLY sick went to the doctor monday for testing which is not back yet. Anyway as of today I cant eat at all, I am breastfeeding Kai and I am really dehydrated. They have asked me to admit myself to the hospital. BUT I feel it will be harder for me to look after bub there and get rest ect. What do you think I should do? I am sorry I just cant think and I hate hospitals.

I think you should admit your self...sounds like you need help to get soem nutrients into your body so you can healthily feed your bub.

Hun if your not getting what you need into your body then it will be affecting what kai is drinking and will end up making you sicker :(

I would be heading down to the hospital getting the drip rehydrating myself. Even if your not resting at least your body is getting what it needs!

And hugs hun it sounds nasty :(

You poor thing.
Maybe just go in and let them put you on a drip for a few hours.

If youre that sick & dehydrated breastfeeding is going to make you worse

Your kids need you more than they need breastmilk. I know this isn't ideal but put him on a bottle and get yourself healthy so you can go back to him and start breast feeding again

I have been pumping him full of solids so I dont need to BF him as much so we are down to 4 feeds a day :( I think I might just go on the drip for a couple of hours. The thing is I feel well most of the time. I am just dehydrated. The hospital here is useless too and I am also scared i will pick up some illness from there while my immune system is weak :S I will call them.

Its really a tough one Sarah. Can you keep trying to drink water even if its not staying down?
If you go to hospital you will be able to take Kai and have him stay with you since you are breastfeeding. If you want to keep breastfeeding, I wouldn't go with a bottle. Maybe even the drip for a few hours might help. But yes id be very worried about bugs too.
Big hugs to you.

Gahhhhh I dont want to take bub up there. I am drinking LOADS of water. Kai does not take a bottle and giving him one would break my heart.

i'd go in and let them help re-hydrate you, its the best way to keep yr milk supply up too. I had gastro a few weeks back and it affected feeding for a week after. Can you bring someone with you to help look after Kai so he can stay too?

Otherwise get some gastrolyte or whatever its called, rest and drink.

Turns out I have gardia :( something that you have to be very unlucky to catch it must have been in our water supply. So I have to take antibiotics and not feed Kai for 10 days. I am really sad about this and am worried that he will not want to nurse afterwards and that I will have no milk.

How come you can't feed Kai for 10 days?
Can you google to get another opinion. I wouldn't think that would be right Sarah.
Hugs. I hope you get better soon.
If you don't feed for 10 days your supply will be affected, even if you do express.

I am well aware about my supply :( gardia is a protizoa (sp) and needs hardcore antibotics and is resistant to most, the treatment has shown brain tumors in some lab rats and is NOT safe while breastfeeding. I am really upset about this but right now I am not absorbing anything from a single thing I eat and I am really unwell. So I am going to pump this week and hope that he still loves to nurse after.

Lots of love and good health vibes xoxoxoxo are u going to go on the drip? it'd be good 4 u :) Even if u check urself out afterwards ;) Also there is that rehydrating stuff u can get from chemist, but sounds like with the gardia some really proper help from the hospy will be the best option. But u gotta do what suits u best

Im really sorry Sarah :(
I thought the antibiotics might be the reason. Is there no alternative antibiotics for it?
Hopefully Kai will come back to your breast after you finish.
I guess just express as much as you can to keep up your supply for the 10 days. Huge huge hugs for you.

I've lost my milk for a few days from being on meds/sick and gotten it back. Cait waited it out and was just fine...

I'd get some hydralyte and drink as much as you can.

In the mean time, the study you read with brain tumours, did they say how long those rats were on the meds etc? I don't know those meds, but I do know most studies involve long-term use, not short-term use. I'd suspect that in short-term use you'd be fine to breastfeed, but alas that's your choice and responsibility so I'm not saying it's ok, but suggesting a bit more reading and such??

So sorry that you are going through this. I'm glad you found out what is wrong and now you can recover but I can imagine how heartbreaking it is for you not being able to feed your baby. Can I suggest that you give him goats milk formula if he will take it? The protein content is the closest to that of breastmilk so less likely to upset his tummy. Also, I would give it to him in a sippy cup - one where he needs to suck to get the milk out, rather than have it in a bottle. Good luck and I hope you feel better real soon. :)

Thanks ladies, I am just not willing to risk the antibiotics getting through to him I am aware it would only be a tiny amount that went through but I just cant. I just chatted to Luke about the 5am feed and asked if it would be ok to give him that and we decided not too. It was horrid buying formular this afternoon :( I did buy a slow release nipple for the bottle. Its very hard for me to do this. I will be pumping to keep my supply and I have already got the script for the milk boosting tabs for once I am finished the antibiotics.

Maybe if you're game you can take the boosting meds now, since pumping doesn't always keep your supply where it needs to be!

Good luck with everything!

When ds wanted the bottle over the boob I expressed for at least three weeks before my milk went and even then in the end I went from three pumps a day to two pumps a day and then to one pump a day due to time restraints. I think you will be able to do this for ten days as long as you look after your health. Happy mummy equals happy body and happy body equals better milk supply. I really hope this works out for you. I also would not risk feeding bubs on antibiotics that the docs says not to breastfeed too.

Oh Sarah - I hope you are feeling better soon.

You are doing the right thing - you only want the best for your bub, so get yourself healthy again and he will be loving that booby milk in no time.

Make sure you rest and get your hubby to do all the house work.

I know exactly how you feel (except the breastfeeding bit). I had this before I had kids and it seriously was not a good thing to have. I found once I had the tablets (I had to take four at once and that was it) within two days I was heaps better.

Hope you start to feel better soon and the breastfeeding gets back on track.
