We had a checkup for B at the paed today to review the losec dosage and stuff. When I told the paed what a nightmare B had been with feeding (ie he only drinks 500-600ml per day and thats a fight) he promptly upped the losec dose to the same as Mackenzie's!

He also thinks there is some sort of protein sensitivity happening that is not showing up in the basic tests. We go again in 4 weeks to make sure the reflux is back under control and he's gaining weight still (which he hasnt the last 2-3 weeks) and if theres still feeding issues we will trial on elecare to see if it makes difference.

He also said even though the current recommendations for solids say 4-6 months that we should hold off in case theres a reaction...we will introduce under particular guidelines...

*sigh* I thought B was gonna be the healthy, no issues bub!

He has had stool tests done twice now...neither M or B has had bloods done cause the paed doesnt like to do them unless its life or death. He said the tests often pick up the intolerance but the sensitivity goes undetected so we really wont know unless we try the elecare which we wont need to do if the increased losec dose helps to settle the feeding.

Have you put your name down to get in to the RPA allergy clinic? They might be able to help....

Do you need a referral? Should we wait till we are ready to start solids and see how it goes?

all of tays original stools samples came back normal .. she had about 6 before the pead allergies ran this set of special tests.. ? i hope things settle soon for him

kids with protein sensitivities do better on a low salicylate diet too .. just something to keep in mind when you do decide to introduce food .

I was going to suggest RPA allergy clinic, they are great for allergies and intolerances and reflux too. It does take 3-6 months to get an appointment though so book in now. Yes you need a referral. My doctor had never heard of the allergy centre but I just told him what to write lol. This is their website http://www.cs.nsw.gov.au/rpa/allergy/
Oh and they told me to hang off for solids with caleb as long as I could ( 7 months plus or longer).

We go to RPA every 6 months for both boys. We had our last appointment on Monday actually. Sam is still allergic to milk and has developed a dust allergy (no big deal, 90% of people have dust allergy). Caleb is now on Losec full time (he used to only have it when he had the reflux cough). I have to get the Losec script filled, need to go to a compounding chemist as its such a pain in tablet form. Apparently there is one in Warrawong so I'm going this afternoon after school.

If you need any more info about RPA just ask, we have been going there twice a year for 4 or 5 years.

Thanks for that Leisa, the paed we have is quite good and did say we would follow strict guidelines for solids if necessary so I am assuming it would be something like a low salicylate diet....I wonder why M was never tested for intolerances etc for her reflux? Maybe I should ask when I take her again next month cause we just did another 4 day no losec trial for her and she stopped eating and told me she had a bellyache!

Is losec much more expensive in compounded form? Can I use my normal script?

I dont find it much of a pain in tablet form but I worry that the kids arent getting the whole dose as there is often a few granules left in the syringe or cup?

I went to a chemist today that was supposed to be a compounding chemist but they weren't too happy about having to do it and said it would cost $50 and take an hour :-/ and managed to talk me out of it. Yeah Caleb had his first dose (tablet dissolved in water) again tonight and heaps of granules left in the glass.........

So you are happy with your paed, not interested in RPA? Its good you have found a good paed, will have to get his name from you if he is good with allergies and reflux.

if you get a script for the losec and another script for the compounding you can take them to the childrens hospital .. (well in melb here it works this way ) we pay $5 for a month worth of compounded losec :) (both girls are on hcc for their medical issues .. so i think the normal script is $32 ??? )

having said taht if your in the express postcodes. our childrens also post it out express :) so 32 +7.70?

in brisbane we were paying $75 for 2/ 3 wks worth ..
